Yesterday, Local 95 introduced the main body of ou Yesterday, Local 95 introduced the main body of our staffing study. From here on out we plan on taking the study, breaking it up into sections, and giving you a more thorough explanation of each part.

Today we are going to break down the Immediate recommendations of the study. We hope to give you a better understanding of what the recommendations are, why they are needed, and most importantly how they will help keep the community safe.

The main recommendation that came out of the study is to follow The NFPA 1710 Standard. Specifically, NFPA 1710 strongly advocates for all fire apparatus to staff, at a MINIMUM, 4 firefighters per fire apparatus.

Currently, the Oak Park Fire Department only staffs 3 firefighters per fire apparatus. Independent studies have shown that increasing the number of firefighters per apparatus greatly increases both the efficiency that firefighters can perform life saving tasks, and the ability to do so safely.

Please visit the link in our bio for the NIST Study

As you can see in the study linked above, just about every aspect of firefighting gets more efficient and faster by increasing the number of firefighters per apparatus. Engine crews get water on the fire faster. Truck crews perform searches and most importantly execute rescues quicker and safer. The number of firefighters showing up, especially on the first arriving apparatus, can literally be the difference between life and death.

The Facts:

NFPA 1710 calls for a minimum of 4 Firefighters per fire apparatus. Oak Park currently staffs 3.

Studies show 4 firefighter crews are more efficient in saving lives, protecting property, and all other aspects of firefighting.

According to the NIST Report on Residential Fireground Field Experiments, four-person crews are able to complete time-critical fireground tasks 5.1 minutes (nearly 25%) faster than three-person crews.

Fire more than doubles in size every minute. Every second counts to save lives and protect property.
